The Mystery unrevealed: Natron Valley

Natron Valley (English for Wadi El Natrun) is known with its Egyptian salt mines that are the main source for sodium chloride salt for the world. Natron Valley locate in Behera Governorate, to the west of the Egypt Delta. The name Natron is an ancient Egyptian name that refers to the presence of 8 lakes in the region. These lakes are the main source for salt mining.

The name Natron used by the Pharaoh to refer to the salt that is coming from this particular place in the western desert of Egypt. Egyptian salt is as old as history itself. Natron introduced to the Lain language as Natrium from which the chemical symbol of sodium derived (Na). It seems that we will never beat the Pharaoh after all these years of modernization. We now are utilizing the same salt they have to use for nearly the same purposes.

The Mystery unrevealed: Siwa Oasis

Siwa oasis is 800 km to the west of Cairo, the capital. Besides the many natural resources in the Oasis, salt is the white gold of the Oasis.

Siwa Oasis is know with its salt lakes such as Lake Zatoun, Lake Agurmi in the northeast of the oasis. The salt lake area is nearly 960 feddans with another lakes area to the west of Sahli city that is 3600 acres. The lake of Al-Maraqi t the west of the Oasis is about 700 acres.

There are nine lakes with an estimated area of 55 thousand acres and a depth of 15 meters below the surface of the lake. The estimated amount of salt mined out from these 9 lakes is about 60 M tons.

The white gold salt lakes surrounding the oasis is the main source of a rare quality of salt.

The quality of Siwa oasis salt is good for roads and airports for its high melting capacity. Moreover, Siwa salt contains more than 1400 natural elements for many industries.

The high purity of salt from Siwa oasis is due to the location of the oasis away from the world pollution in an isolated area in the western Egyptian desert.

The Egyptian Salt in the Pharaoh times

The Egyptian Salt in the Pharaoh times

The ancient Egyptians used the salt mixture of Natron coming from the lakes bed for cleaning. The ancient Egyptians used Natron to cleanse the body. They mixed Natron with oil and created the first soap in history. As we do today, Natron, basically a salt mixture, used for its water softening properties while the pharaoh removes oil and grease.

Also, natron used as a cleansing agent for the teeth. Natron, the Egyptian salt, used as-is without adding water to cleans teeth and as a mouthwash. The ancient Egyptian was very advanced in medicine. They used natron, the Egyptian salt, as an antiseptic for wound and skin cuts. This remedy replaced cauterization in the civil community. They knew that a clean wound will increase the chance of survival. They found that salt from both Natron Valley & Siwa Oasis help keep wounds clean and the afflicted person survive.

What are the other things which the Egyptian salt utilized for in the past ?

Natron, the Egyptian salt,  used for the preservation of fish and meat for a long time. The ancient Egyptian used to eat the salted fish at the turn of the agriculture year. Fish kept in the Egyptian salt for all the year round to be consumed as delicious food in a great festival.

The same theory was applied to preserve and cleaning leather. Adding salt to the skin of slaughtered animals was the first step in preparing the skin to be leather and then used as clothes, for example.

It seems that most interesting and yet mysterious use of Natron, Egyptian Salt, is during mummification. Mummification is the great secret of the pharaoh priests. Natron Egyptian salt acts in mummification in two way. First, Natron dries up the flesh of the dead body, hence the name mummification. The dried body lives longer and resists decay. Second, when the mummy exposed to moisture, the alkalinity medium of the skin rises due to the reaction of carbonate, present in the Egyptian salt mixture, with water thus, rendering the medium hostile to bacteria. This could be a glimpse of the secret of mummification.

More is still. Pharaoh artisans used to mix the Egyptian salt Natron with castor oil. Surprisingly, they created a fuel that produces to smoke when burned. The great benefit is that the pharaoh artisans can paint their intricate wall artwork without the emission of smoke. This smokeless fuel is really fantastic. The creation of the smokeless fuel refers to the intelligence of the ancient people who once lived around the Great River Nile- the Pharaoh.

What is the Natron Egyptian salt composed of?

The Egyptian salt Natron and the mineral Natron, in general, created by the crystallization process. In nature, when large lakes, like those in Egypt, with a high content of sodium carbonate, are dried up, the remaining sodium salt crystallizes. Moreover, the brine solution of the sodium-rich lakes catches carbon dioxide from air and form bicarbonate and carbonate salt compounds. Because of certain favorable temperature changes in the ancient years, the Egyptian salt contains decahydrate i.e. 10 water molecules attached to the sodium carbonate salt. The composition in this way, sodium carbonate decahydrate, is rare all over the world. only Egypt possess the huge resource of the salt.

The final composition of the Egyptian salt natron is a mixture of sodium carbonate decahydrate and about 17% of sodium bicarbonate with small amounts of sodium chloride and sodium sulfate.  The pure form of the Egyptian salt natron is white or colorless. When the Egyptian salt mixed with impurities, the color would change to gray or yellow.

Natron has  involved in many practical applications from the down of pharaoh, throughout history, and to the contemporary time.

Egyptian salt today

In modern times, salt, in Egypt, comes from saline bodies of water. In the North of Egypt, there are four large salt lagoons from which the currently used salt comes from. These salts are Burullus, Edku, Marout, and Manzala. The most convenient way to get the salt out of the sea is by evaporation.  Salt can collected directly from the crusted shoreline flats.

Salt derived from the Northern lakes is the sodium chloride that we used to adding to our food-table salt. Therefore, it can used directly without further chemical processes.

Egyptian salt comes, also, from vast beds of sedimentary evaporite minerals. The mineral halite, also called rock salt, results from evaporation of water from enclosed lakes in ancient Egypt. When those lakes or lagoons dried up, salt remains in a solid form, we call it rocks, and forms the salt deposits. In Egypt, such sediments of sea salt are present in Qattara and Siwa. The estimated amount of salt in these two areas exceed 15 M tons. Salt from Qattara and Siwa is highly pure and white in color. This considered, along with the salt from the lakes, the main source of salt that  exported all over the world.
